They gave their LAST full measure…
Posted by JohnNov 11
In his Gettysburg Address, President Lincoln spoke these words…
It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced. It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain…
Today we pause to remember the countless men and women who have given their LAST full measure of devotion to a country that gives us the the freedom to complain about it. November 11th (originally called Armistice Day) marks the agreed upon day for the end of World War I… the hostilities were to cease at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Find a veteran today… and give them a hug.
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, tho poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae (1872 – 1918)
